Business owners are turning to file sharing programs run in the cloud to support and promote an increasingly mobile and disparate workforce, according to a new report from hosted phone service solutions provider RingCentral.
A survey of 300 RingCentral customers revealed that 67 percent of respondents have deployed and supplied file sharing solutions to their employees. In doing so, these owners allow employees spread across multiple locations to organize and store all pertinent files in the cloud, which also gives them all access to the same information.
"For business owners, document sharing in the cloud is critical in supporting a mobile, remote workforce, allowing workers to access documents and collaborate with team members from anywhere," the report stated.
Moving forward, many organizations will find that supporting a mobile workforce is necessary, as new technologies are leading to the rise of telecommuting and remote workers. As this trend continues, more employees are likely to request — if not demand — the ability to work from anywhere and at any time.
RingCentral's survey revealed that business owners support this way of thinking. The study also found that 64 percent of small and medium-sized business owners said they could manage their entire organization remotely this year. Another 57 percent of respondents said a majority of their applications are run in the cloud.
"Legacy hardware and systems no longer fit the way modern businesses work," RingCentral's Naveen Gupta said. "Small and mid-sized businesses are adopting solutions that are flexible, mobile and affordable, and the survey data clearly speaks to this trend."
A greater focus on the cloud may become more necessary moving forward, as enterprise adoption of mobile devices, tablets specifically, is set to skyrocket. According to a new report from Canadian analysis firm TechSci Research, the demand for tablets will increase fivefold within the enterprise segment during the next five years.
